Why “weight” any longer?

V-Quest: Mass reductions bring opportunities, opportunities that are often hidden or not fully appreciated when choosing a build methodology. These reductions can be a game changer for certain projects. Here is an example. 

A developer approached us with a traditionally designed apartment block ready for consent:

– 16m Deep Piles
– Tilt Panel Envelope
– Suspended Concrete Floors
– Structural Steel Frame

V-Quest wholistically analysed the design. We helped identify the design sweet spot (Carbon Cost tipping point).

– CLT / LWTF Envelope 
– CLT Floors
– Structural Steel Frame

A hybrid. 

The result? 3.75m Kgs of carbon emissions prevented, cost neutral, 1m kg of weight removed per building. That mass further resulted, resulted in:

– Replacement of the 16m piles with a gravel raft (substantial savings)
– Potential to add 2 extra floors

Not only was the mass timber building carbon negative, but it was also now more attractive due to the pile cost savings and potential of higher yields. 

We include mass, because it raises opportunities.
