House building is twice as big as non-residential. The way we build houses is about to change.
The big change needed in housing is to go from small scale development for owner-occupiers, to institutions who build for renters. This will be helped by policy changes that will allow significant intensification along transport corridors.
Build to rent is a common sector internationally and is just getting a foothold in New Zealand. As it grows, those with commercial and vertical building expertise will be best placed to build better homes with better materials and better methods.
