Canada’s Blueprint for Mass Timber Success Unveiled

24 June 2024

A Canadian pan-industry group in Canada has released a “Mass Timber Roadmap” with an associated report outlines an ambitious and strategic vision for the future of mass timber in Canada to transform green construction and drive economic growth.  What’s relevant to New Zealand about the plan is that it’s top priority actions also apply to NZ.

Public-Private Collaboration: calls for a partnership between public and private sectors to develop and advance a comprehensive policy package that will enhance the value of Canada’s forest resources. (NZ – Until now Kainga Ora has been the key collaborator with industry leaders.)

Standardisation: There is a need to standardise building archetypes, wood specifications, and connectors throughout the supply chain to streamline processes and reduce costs. (NZ – Timber Unlimited and Timber Design Society are focused on this.)

Skills Development: Implementing a robust skills development plan that encompasses all aspects of the supply chain is essential to support the sector’s growth. (NZ – Currently left to industry and individual companies.)
