Purpose of the report
The purpose of the annual report is to provide an overview of the current and emerging trends in the building and construction sector; and fulfills section 169 of the Building Act 2004.
About the 2022 report
The report provides an overview of the key data and building trends on the building and construction sector from July 2021 to June 2022.
Key findings from the 2022 report
- The building and construction sector is a major contributor to New Zealand’s economy.
- Activity across the sector remained strong despite ongoing challenges brought by the COVID-19 pandemic. Specifically, building consent numbers reached record-level highs and the workforce pipeline continued to grow. However, the sector continued to be impacted by supply chain disruptions and rising construction costs.
- The building landscape is also changing with climate change being one of the key drivers shaping new trends in building design, technologies, and materials. Digitalisation and decarbonisation are two key concepts behind new and emerging trends, which will enable the sector to be more environmentally friendly, less labour intensive, safer for workers, more cost efficient and resilient. The circular economy concept is also being introduced in the new generation of construction materials that are being developed.
