The construction of Auckland University of Technology’s A1 Building has hit a significant milestone with the installation of the first of nine post-tensioned LVL timber frames weighing up to 31 tonnes. When complete, A1 will be the social and academic hub for Health Sciences and the first step of the university’s masterplan to reinvigorate the North Campus.
The new four storey timber-framed building and atrium will connect with existing facilities on the site, elegantly stitching together old and new elements to create a vibrant campus heart that functions as much more than just a place to attend lectures. Using an innovative, lightweight timber structure, combined with the adaptive reuse of an existing building, A1 will become AUT’s lowest carbon and most energy efficient building using only half the embodied carbon of an equivalent new development. A1 is due for completion in early 2024.
